What is Araldite glue?

Araldite glue has been a part of our lives for decades and in our latest guide we take a look at what it is, and where it can be used, as well as its features and industrial applications.

What is Araldite glue?

Araldite is a registered trademark of the Huntsman Corporation, a US based, global chemicals company, and refers to the company’s adhesive products. More specifically, Araldite is a two part epoxy glue which sets when an epoxy resin is mixed with a hardener.

How to use Araldite glue

At cableties-online, we stock Araldite Rapid Adhesive, an epoxy bond that can be used to carry out repairs indoors and outdoors, that is supplied in handy to use tubes. Always wear gloves before using the adhesive and ensure that all surfaces to be glued are clean and dry, and dust-free. To use, simply open both tubes and place an equal amount of each component onto a clean, dry surface. Mix the two parts together with a spatula and, within 5 minutes, apply to both surfaces to be glued together. Press the two surfaces together and leave for at least twenty minutes; Araldite Rapid should be left for at least three hours to cure fully.

Uses for Araldite glue

The first Araldite epoxy resins were manufactured at Duxford, Cambridgeshire in 1950, where it was used on the fuselage of Donald Campbell’s Bluebird car when he attempted the world land speed record in 1960. Since then, it has been used for numerous applications in a wide range of industries, including construction when it was used in the world's longest single beam composite bridge in Madrid, and sailing for its ability to withstand the impact of vibrations and stress at high speeds over water. Prestige motor company, Lamborghini, used an Araldite adhesive to bond two sections of carbon composite together to form the structural skin of its Aventador model. This durable product is recommended for use on the following materials:  metal, wood, masonry, ceramics, glass, dry concrete, chipboard, leather, cardboard, fabric, rubber, and most plastics.

Features of Araldite glue

Araldite Rapid is a strong, long-lasting, solvent-free adhesive which can be sanded and painted. The two part epoxy resin adhesive remains strong under pressure and has a working temperature range of -30°C to 80°C. It is impact-, oil- and chemical-resistant, but should not be used on any objects or surfaces that will come into contact with food or drink.

Our packs of Araldite Rapid Adhesive 2 Part Epoxy Glue contain two separate tubes of epoxy resin and hardener which are mixed together in equal parts before use. We also offer the Araldite Rapid 24ml Syringe which dispenses both components in equal measure at the plunge of the syringe, making it easy to use, with no mess. Both products should be stored according to the manufacturer’s instructions, at room temperature in a dry place.
