A guide to screw mount cable ties

Screw mount cable ties – what are they?

In our latest article, we take a close look at a particular type of cable tie, the screw mount cable tie, and examine the part they play in cable management.

Nylon cable ties

We are all familiar with the standard nylon 6/6 cable tie, designed to hold wires and cables securely, that have a host of industrial, commercial and domestic applications. Consisting of a length of nylon with an opening or pawl at one end, through which the opposite pointed end is threaded and pulled tight around the cables, cable ties come in assorted lengths and colours.

There are different types of cable tie, including stainless steel cable ties, releasable cable ties, and cable tray cable ties to name a few. One particular type of tie is the screw mount cable tie.

Screw mount cable ties

Working in exactly the same way as a traditional cable tie, screw mount cable ties feature a screw hole at the pawl end of the tie, just above the head. The screw hole enables the tie to be mounted and secured permanently to a surface, such as walls, ceilings or racking. They can be attached to metal or wood and can be secured in place with a screw or a bolt.

What are screw mount cable ties made from?

Made from the same nylon 6/6 as standard cable ties, screw mount ties offer all the same features, with the same tensile strength and a working temperature range of -40°C to 85°C. They are available in two colours – black and natural – and a choice of 6 lengths and 4 widths. The black ties are UV resistant and screw hole sizes correspond to the width of the tie.

When to use screw mount cable ties

  • Under desk cable management – extension cables are often used for the many cables found under a work desk but these can be a trip hazard and are unsightly. A screw mount cable tie can wrap around the plug lead and be fastened to the underside of the desk or to a wall.
  • Network cable management – network cabling needs to be well organised not only to avoid it looking a mess but also to ensure a good air flow. Where air flow is impeded, overheating can occur, leading to increased maintenance requirements and even hardware failure.
  • HVAC – in any indoor industrial environment where vibrating components can be damaging, for example industrial generator parts and HVAC components, screw mount cable ties can be used to stabilise cabling and wiring to minimise or prevent vibration.

How to use screw mount cable ties

Mark the position of the screw mount cable tie/s on the surface where the cables will be running and drill holes at regular intervals into the wall or flat surface. Secure the ties to the surface with screws or bolts before guiding the cables along the line of ties. Wrap the tie around the cables in a loop and secure in the usual way, by threading the end of the tie trough the pawl. Once the tie has been tightened, any excess can be cut off.
