Stainless steel cable ties – what makes them unique?

With a wide working temperature range and unequalled strength, the stainless steel cable tie is the undisputed king of cable ties. But what else makes them so unique?

316 Stainless Steel Cable Ties

The majority of stainless steel cable ties are made from 304 stainless steel but at Cableties-online, we supply only marine-grade 316 stainless steel cable ties. The components of each differ only very slightly, with 304 stainless steel containing 18% chromium and 8% nickel, compared to 316 stainless steel which contains 16% chromium, 10% nickel and 2% molybdenum. It is the molybdenum content that gives the cables ties resistance to chloride corrosion and pitting and renders them much more resistant to heat.

Unique roller ball locking system

Our low profile stainless steel cable ties feature a unique roller ball locking system. While nylon cable ties have a ridged side with a locking barb, stainless steel cable ties are smooth on each side. Once the end has been fed through the locking mechanism, the roller ball locks the tie securely in place, making it difficult to be loosened or released, to render them tamper-resistant. This unique locking system means the stainless steel cable ties are impervious to vibration which could lead to breaking and abrasion. In any situation where it is essential for wires, cables or pipes to remain in place safely and securely, or in areas where accessibility might be difficult, stainless steel cable ties are vital.

Working temperature range of stainless steel cable ties

In any environment where extremes of temperature are a consideration, stainless steel cable ties are ideal. Capable of withstanding temperatures from -80°C to +538°C, all our cable ties conform to the 18th Edition of the IET Wiring Regulations (BS7671), attesting to their durability and safety.

Extreme weather resistance of stainless steel cable ties

Stainless steel cable ties are renowned for their ability to withstand extreme environmental conditions. Coupled with their wide working temperature range, these cable ties will not degrade with prolonged UV exposure, making them ideal for outdoor applications. Additionally, the stainless steel will not absorb moisture which means the cable ties are highly resistant to corrosion. This feature makes them the perfect choice for use in shipbuilding and off-shore drilling.

Industrial applications for stainless steel cable ties

As stainless steel cable ties will not perish over time, or dry out, and as they do not emit gases or particles, they can be used in air handling systems as well as industrial and commercial HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) systems. Their durability makes them the obvious choice when working with chemicals and their tensile strength means they can stabilise even the heaviest of plant machinery.
