Common types of cable tie

Of all the cable ties available, which cable ties are best and which are the most popular? Our round up of the best cable ties on the market will help you choose the right one for your next project.

Since their invention in 1958, cable ties have been sold in their billions, with the original manufacturer, Thomas and Betts, producing its 28 billionth tie in 2018, enough to reach from the earth to the moon 22 times! Cable ties are manufactured from heavy-duty stainless steel, plastic or nylon and even Velcro but by far the most common type is the humble nylon 6/6 cable tie which is available in the following forms:

Nylon 6/6 serrated cable ties

Used for securing and bundling cables and lines, our standard nylon 6/6 cable ties feature a ratchet/head design, with serrations. This enables the ratchet to pass through the head or pawl of the tie with the serrations forming a tight hold on the items being bundled together. These single use ties are available in a variety of lengths up to 540mm and widths up to 12.7mm. Our widest cable ties offer a tensile strength of 114kg, which allows them to bear weight up to 114kg without breaking.

Nylon 6/6 coloured cable ties

Offering the same credentials as our standard black and natural cable ties, our coloured cable ties are available in a host of colours including purple and silver, as well as a selection of fluorescent/neon colours such as fluorescent pink, fluorescent green and others.

Nylon 6/6 releasable cable ties

As their name suggests, releasable cable ties are designed to be reused several times. Where a standard, single use cable tie has one end which is pointed that is fed through a cube or pawl at the opposite end, and is then held securely by the serrations along the length of the tie, a releasable cable tie pawl has a mechanism which allows the grip on the tie to be released and the tie undone. Our releasable cable ties are available in a choice of six popular colours with a tab release or a button release mechanism (7.6mm width only).

At cableties-online, our nylon 6/6 cable ties can also be purchased as marker cable ties, screw mount cable ties and many others. Our extensive range can be seen here.

In industries involving harsh conditions or extremes of heat, the nylon 6/6 cable tie is overtaken as the most popular and functional type by the stainless steel cable tie.

Stainless steel cable ties

Our stainless steel cables ties are manufactured from the highest quality, marine grade 316 stainless steel. 316 stainless steel, compared to 304 stainless steel, contains molybdenum, a chemical element which increases strength and resistance to corrosion. Stainless steel cable ties have a broad working temperature range and an ability to withstand extreme environmental factors, characteristics which make them a favourite within several industries, including the off-shore oil industry, and the mining and chemical industries as well as the electronics, shipbuilding and automotive industries.

For more than 15 years, our family-run business has been providing cable ties to every kind of industry and tradesperson, from jobbing electricians to offshore maintenance crews and we hold large amounts of stock ready to be dispatched to any mainland UK address.
